Early years
Verne was born in the sea port of Nantes in 1828. He was the youngest boy in a big family. Jules had one brother and three sisters.

Jules went to boarding school when he was six. His teacher, who was the widow of a naval captain,  told her pupils that her husband was shipwrecked and would return one day…  Jules was fascinated by this story.
In 1848 Jules went to Paris because his father wanted him to study law.

Literary Salons
In his spare time Jules visited literary salons. There he met the son of Alexandrea Dumas in 1848. (Alexandre Dumas was the author of the three Musketeers.) The boys wrote a play together that was performed at the Théâtre Historique in 1850.

Stories and Theatre
The young law student loved writing so he wrote many stories and play scripts. Jules’ stories were often about travelling, the sea and shipwrecks and he was one of the first authors to write science fiction. 
Famous works are: ‘Around the World in 80 Days’, ‘A Journey to the Centre of the Earth’, ‘The Mysterious Island’, ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues under Sea’, ‘From Earth to Moon’ and  ‘Five weeks in a Balloon’.
